Auteur Books is an independent publisher based in Brisbane, Australia. An imprint of Paperfields Press, its name is inspired by the Auteur Film Theory that arose in France in the 1940s.
In Hollywood, it is the blockbusters and studio films that are greenlit without fail. Small independents get made if they are cheap enough. Anything outside of these ‘formulas and rules’ are generally overlooked, because the financial success is an unknown quantity.
Auteur film are exceptions to the rule in that they bear the personal stamp of their directors – think M. Night Shyamalan, Alfred Hitchcock, David Lynch, Spike Lee, and Quentin Tarantino. An auteur’s driving force is their artistic vision as well as a deep-seated belief and knowing that a strong artistic vision does not have to be at odds with commercial success. If anything, it is often a winning solution.
The traditional publishing world does not differ from the movie industry in that popular genres and formulas are relied upon, embraced, and sought out as the ‘safe bet’, because they are tried and tested, they have ready made audiences, and they are proven to sell. Additionally, given the number of creative decisions that are outsourced – think multiple editors, sensitivity readers, book cover designers, etc. – one could say that the author’s influence ends when their manuscript is sold.
